The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

I am so excited to be reviewing Perks! I have been waiting for this film for ages and I’m really excited to be sharing all my thoughts on it!!

The film centers about Charlie, a misfit, who is trying to understand life, and finally is accepted by a group of people who help him experience life and get away from the misfortune that has followed him in his life.

I’m not going to lie. I laughed, I cried, I squeezed my mother’s arm very tight. I had a super emotional reaction to this film. As someone who loved the book, it’s hard to watch the movie and not be super critical. The film really was true to the book, although they missed pretty critical areas like Candace’s abortion, from a view of someone who didn’t read the book, the film was amazing! It follows Charlie as an outcast who has no friends and feels very out of touch with his peers. Then he meets Sam and Patrick, who accept him and help him experience this life he never would have had without them. He learns so much more and starts to enjoy life, even if he slightly spirals out of control towards the end. The film is so close to your emotions.

This film, in my opinion, is definitely not for those light of heart. It reaches some pretty touchy subjects. It was funny for me to be sitting in the theatre and see this old couple sitting two seats away. I was like, “You are both in for a rude awakening.” Otherwise, anyone can watch it. There are also some connotations that you might need to read the book to understand, but otherwise it’s pretty easy to get everything.

Would I recommend it? A million times yes! The film is so great and has a lot of fantastic actors and just made me come out of the theatre feeling so much emotion that I just wanted to burst. It truly was one of the best films I’ve seen this year.
