My Acne-Free Skin Routine

Growing up as a victim of acne, my skin has never been something to be fond of. Teen acne turned into adult acne, and nearly a decade later I’m still in a constant war of clear skin and even skin tone.

Sometime around my 21st birthday my skin seemed to finally figure itself out and I had clear skin just in time for graduation. Then I moved home for job hunting and I broke out again. Then I moved to Portland and began the precious dance of humidity, heat, cold, and rain. It’s only now, over a year later, that I finally found a skin routine that keeps my skin acne-free and hydrated.

And while I may occasionally have a spot or two, having clear pores for the first time in my life has given me the confidence to go without makeup in public {shocker, I know} and to finally feel comfortable in my own skin.

My Skin Care Routine

Cleanse

Last summer I went to an aesthetician to talk about my acne. For years I had been using cream cleansers and harsh scrubs and I wasn’t seeing any results. She introduced me to the Tu’el Acne Skin Deep Pore Cleansing System cleansing oil and herbal toner and I don’t think I will ever switch back. The oil does a great job of breaking down dirt and makeup without stripping my skin, and the toner leaves my skin feeling soothed.

Ever since I started using this oil/toner routine I have noticed no irritation after washing, which has been great for how sensitive my skin is.

Mask

After cleansing I apply a mask 3-4x a week. I’m always using a different mask and love finding new ones. Some personal favourites include:

Make sure to follow instructions to make sure you aren’t “over-masking”.

Tone

Applying toner after a mask is huge for me, as the pores are open and ready. Lately I’ve been using Sunday Riley Martian Mattifying Melting Gel Toner and I love the water gel feeling. It is refreshing and helps minimize pores. Of all the toners I’ve used lately, this one will stick in my routine for how great it leaves my skin.

Treat

As anyone with acne will tell you, the best way to kill it is to treat it. I have tried every single drugstore acne treatment out there and none worked. It wasn’t until I started doing the research and finding my exact problems that I was able to find products that work. My two favourite acne treatments are Drunk Elephant Framboos Glycolic Night Serum and Sunday Riley U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil. Both are pricey, but the results are priceless.

Hydrate

The biggest part of my skin routine is hydration. Without it, skin looks dull and freaks out, which for oily skin can mean more breakouts. For morning moisturizing I am a fan of Pacifica Kale Luxe Oil-Free Cream for lightweight moisture and a great base for foundation all day. At night I opt for Trader Joe’s coconut oil, as it provides a deeper hydration and can be used for multiple beauty treatments, from face hydration to hair smoothing to stretch mark conditioning.

Pro Tips

  1. Don’t touch your face. If you need to, use a knuckle or a tissue to avoid hand oils clogging pores
  2. Take an Omega-3 supplement
  3. ALWAYS remove your makeup before sleeping or exercising

This routine has cleared up my skin in as little as a month, from extremely painful acne to barely any. I highly recommend trying these products, or seeing an aesthetician for something tailored to your routine.
