A Note of Encouragement for Graduates

One of the scariest moments in life is college graduation. It seems like every bit of schooling, stress, and tears comes down to the moment they hand you a diploma and you start in the adult world.

Heavy, huh?

note for college grads

As someone who was in your shoes only a year ago, I know that stress and worry. But I’ve also seen the results of that stress and worry and have some words of encouragement for you.

You’ve got this!

Why You Shouldn’t Stress Post-Grad

A year ago I was completely lost as graduation came about. I had just gotten out of a very serious relationship with someone who I had planned to live with the next year and share expenses with. I had decided (despite my expensive Editorial News journalism degree) that I did not want to pursue a career in hard journalism. I had zero clue where I wanted to live, do with my life, or where I wanted my life to go. Talk about worry and stress.

Lots of my friends already had internships or jobs lined up all around the country. And those who didn’t knew they could get something in their hometown. Me? There aren’t any jobs that aren’t food service for a 21-year-old with a journalism degree.

After graduation (and the two months after where I finished up some credits) I didn’t spend my time looking for a job. I had decided that I wanted to stay in the Pacific Northwest, but that’s kind of a broad area. And the end of my lease came nearer and nearer.

I ended up moving in with my parents for a bit. And I’m the kind of girl who always has all her ducks in a row and would never move in with her parents after college. But here I was, babysitting our dog and kind of half-heartedly looking at jobs online. I had decided I wanted something to do in the social media/marketing/interior design/editorial/office assistant world. And then I decided I wanted to live in Portland, because it was close to everything I love (family, friends, concerts, rain, etc.)

I’d been living at home for about a month and my parents told me I needed to get serious about finding a job. And the stress was getting real, as I kept on applying for jobs with no response. I’ve been rejected before, but not on a daily basis.

It wasn’t until I applied for a job that seemed so out of what I was going for (Executive assistant for a general contractor) that I finally got a response. I was amazed. By the end of the week I had secured the job! I was moving to Portland in less than 10 days. What?!

My note of encouragement in this is you can’t give up. There were so many times when I just wanted to stay in my hometown and stay a barista – which is a very great job, but something that would make me miserable. The right job, the right situation for you, it happens when it will, so don’t stress about it! Keep positive and keep on trying. I put out over 30 applications in less than a month with only one response. It just takes faith!

As you enter into this unknown void of your future, you are going to accomplish so many amazing things. It feels like your future is RIGHT NOW, and IN THREE MONTHS, but you have years and years to go, so enjoy where you are now. There will always be stress and worry, but take this short amount of time until you start paying off loans to figure out what is best for you. These years are going to define your life, so why not enjoy them? It’s been six months and I’ve enjoyed starting to pave the journey of who will define for the rest of my life.

So, graduate, don’t worry, it’s going to work out! Put on a big smile, walk across that stage, and get ready for your future to be whatever you want it to be!
