What do you do when you’re out of foundation and the best cheap cosmetics store is having a sale? You. Score. Big.
As I stared at my empty bottle of foundation (and nearly cried because I love it) I realized that unless I wanted to eat nuts for the next two weeks I needed to buy a cheaper foundation for the rest of the month before I could go back to the good stuff. And whenever I need a cheaper cosmetic for a really great price I turn to e.l.f. Cosmetics, where for $3 you can get some really amazing stuff! They were having a sale and I decided to go all out with my spending and purchased nine truly amazing products for a really unbelievable price. How unbelievable? You’ll have to read to the bottom to find out!
Also, I am very aware that I have a problem with buying a lot of lip colour. I’m currently receiving therapy for it, and I appreciate your support during this difficult time.
Let’s check out my haul!
Let’s Haul It: The e.l.f. Edition
This lipstick not only compliments my skin tone like none other (seriously, if you’re a rosy fair-toned individual, this colour is for you) but it is moisturizing and glides on flawlessly, which I love! It’s great for a wash of colour that looks pretty natural and can be worn for work and going out. Even after a few hours the colour stays on and my lips still feel plump, which is a sign of a great lipstick. And only for $3!
I was really unsure of what I would get for this, but I love this! First off, both of the colours are such a subtle purple berry colour and I love that! Second, they are the same moisturizing, gliding formula that most e.l.f. lipsticks have. I’ve only tried the darker shade so far, but it made my lips look so amazing that I had to stop myself from taking selfies and sending them to everyone I know! I’m excited to try the lighter shade too. I think this product is really great for people like me who always have about three lip products in my bag because I’m switching between work and social things all the time. And for $5 it’s truly worth it!
I have pretty pale lips normally, which is likely why I lean toward darker lipsticks, and sometimes I love them and other times I wish I could have naturally darker lips without putting on a creamy lipstick. That’s why I love this balm. A simple swipe on each lip and it looks like I was born with berries in my mouth. I love how subtle the colour is (don’t let the dark pot intimidate you) and it’s now going to always be tossed in me bag. I’m already considering buying other colours, especially since they’re only $2!
So here’s a story: I love NARS blushes (especially Dolce Vita) but can’t always afford the good stuff. And when I saw that a great colour dupe for Dolce Vita was this blush, I had to try it. Upon opening it, I was a little terrified because it’s sparkly – a no-no for me – and looked so dark. I felt that I’d wasted my money. But like all good makeup gurus I decided to try it and go forward in life. The result? “You’re wearing blush? I thought that was just your cheek colour and I was jealous.” Such a natural looking flush (and for a pale girl too!) that doesn’t come off sparkly or glittery. It is now going to always be on my cheeks because it is gorgeous! And for $3 I can always afford it!
This is what I actually came here for! And let me tell you, this foundation is actually everything I needed and more, and for $6! I have some of the oiliest skin on the planet and most foundation just smears off by the time I finish my 20 minute walking commute. Not any more! I’ve worn it three days in a row and each time I have come home with non-oily skin and no smearing. I can’t tell how much it’s helped with my acne (I had a pretty sweaty weekend) I definitely don’t have any new acne, so I’m calling it a win. I did have to combine it with a slightly darker foundation to match my skin tone, but such is the struggle. I don’t think it will replace my Laura Mercier any time soon, but it’s great to have something cheap that works also in my bag.
Okay, so I have a lot to say about this. I own a lot of matte lipstick (80% of my collection) and am always looking for the best pink one that doesn’t look weird. First off, this is more of a light pink than a peach, so be warned. However, the formula stays on well, is hydrating, and provided great pigment to my lips. I just wish it had been a bit darker and a bit more peachy. It also was more shiny than matte, but it also could have just been the colour. I will try another one to compare, but this was probably my one disappointment in my haul even though I do like it for a quick pink lippie to swipe on easily for $3.
I’ve been hearing a lot about people using translucent powder (I normally just dust on some bareMinerals foundation and call it good) and thought I’d try the hype at the high cost of $6. And let me say it’s changed how I feel about makeup completely. Not only can I swipe this mattifying, blurrying, imperfection-hiding powder on and look amazing after shopping for 5 hours (yes, that happened), but I can also apply it over a fresh face and hide all those nasty little marks on my skin with this powder. It really does make my skin look flawless without looking like a matte mess and after this I am considering trying a luxury brand too and seeing what the difference is.
I have tried many a primer in my day and it’s never made enough difference that I’ve incorporated it into my routine. My favourite primer (the only one I would consider using again) is Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer because after application it made my skin feels smooth and soft like a cloud. While this primer isn’t going to rank above my Houglass, I love that it did leave my skin feeling soft and supple when applying foundation. It’s also really lightweight and absorbed well, which was an added bonus I didn’t expect. While I wish it was green like the bottle for some colour correction, I definitely think it was worth the $6.
Fan brushes are amazing for just a little bit of colour or for wiping away any unsightly powder residue. And for $4 this brush does just that. I used it to apply my Hoola bronzer all weekend long and wasn’t disappointed with the subtle bronzy hint it left behind. It’s a sturdy brush that I think is such a steal and even if it does break soon it does a great job already! I’m a big fan of all of my e.l.f. brushes and this one can be included.
So, how much did I pay for this incredible haul?
Seriously, for about 3/4 of what I pay for my regular foundation I bought almost a full makeup bag worth of products that I mostly love.
Always remember that good beauty doesn’t come from a brand, but from a product.
