I Did the GM Diet, and Here’s What Happened

I love trying new and interesting diet plans that show up on the internet. There’s something about trying something that is completely out of the norm that I love. And last week I decided to try something that made me go from 0 to 60 on the healthy eating scale.

The GM Diet is something that General Motors used to put their employees on to help them with their health and to promote efficiency in the workplace. It comprises mostly of fruits and vegetables, with a focus on certain food groups each day. It’s definitely not the easiest diet, but not the worst either.

I went seven days with this strict routine and here’s what happened!

As you can see, there are certain things that need to be eaten each day, and there isn’t a whole lot of leeway. In the seven days I didn’t eat any bread products or anything particularly fattening. Nor did I have dessert, which way by far the hardest.

Day 1

Okay, by far the easiest day. I ate fruit all day. Blueberries, honeydew, cantaloupe, raspberries, apples, you name it! I felt very energized all day, and exceeded my goal of 10,000 steps and 3 whole water bottles. Truly, it was a great day to start my diet

Day 2

I lost three pounds overnight. Today was all vegetables, which was a lot tougher than it sounds. Carrots for breakfast and lunch gets old fast, so I added a bit of all-natural peanut butter to liven it up. For dinner I had a baked potato with some salt, pepper, and olive oil (yes, I cheated on the oil rule) but it was so good I wanted about ten more!

Day 3

Today was pretty sluggish. Actually, there was a point I thought I was going to give up. I was able to have fruit for breakfast, but carrots and edamame for everything else was pretty blah. I couldn’t even muster the energy to go to the gym after class. Definitely wasn’t the easiest day, but I tried.

Day 4

This was my favourite day! Bananas and milk for the win! I had banana, milk, and peanut butter smoothies all day, which was surprisingly filling and gave me tons of energy. I now know that if I ever need a booster day this is how to do it!

Day 5

Today was gross and I told my roommate I was going to quit about seven times. Breakfast was okay with a hard boiled egg and some fruit, but the tomatoes were JUST. TOO. MUCH. I had tomato soup and had to gag it down. And tomato-roasted chicken with brown rice was just disgusting. I ended up scrapping the tomatoes and rice just to eat the chicken. Honestly, the worst day of the diet.

Day 6

After yesterday, I felt so discouraged, but today was actually pretty good! I gained some weight back, which sucked, but body weight does fluctuate pretty quickly, so no big deal. Most of today was eating delicious meals that fit with the diet. A hard boiled egg and fruit for breakfast, some baked carrots for lunch, some post-workout chocolate milk, and tilapia with lemon for dinner. So filling and delicious. Plus, this new diet added to my stamina so much. I was able to do my regular three-mile workout in less than 45 minutes!

Day 7

The last day was bittersweet. I was so excited to get into my birthday (the next day) and eat a delicious dinner and buy myself some legal booze. I had eggs and fruit for breakfast, and kept myself happy with veggies and Odwalla Mango Tango for the rest. For dinner I cheated a bit and tried a small portion of baked ziti after a long week of work.

Over the course of the days I lost approximately six pounds. While the diet boasts 10 to 17 pounds in only seven days, I think it honestly goes to how dedicated you are. While I followed the diet pretty strictly, I had to add flavor or a little something to make it extra manageable. Plus, I didn’t work out as much because of how lightheaded I felt in the afternoons.

Overall, I think everyone should try this diet at least once. It’s a good way to get your body back in shape, plus it sets groundwork for a healthy lifestyle. I will definitely be adding fruit in my morning routine, and I’ve found a few more vegetables I like, so it was a win-win situation overall!
