How to Deal With a Breakup

As I told my mother, “I’ll write a blog post about it and then I’ll feel all better, just like everything else that happens to me.”

So that’s why I’m writing a blog post about my breakup.

After almost a year and a half with my boyfriend, we’ve decided to just be friends. No hard feelings, no anger, just two twenty-somethings who are onto the next adventure in their life. But that’s not to say it isn’t hard. Any time you lose someone who you felt a strong connection (romantic or not) it is incredibly hard on the human heart and that means getting some recovery in before going onto the next phase in life.

In order to continue with my own healing process (and I am doing really well, so this is just an added bonus) I have compiled my list of best ways to deal with a breakup.

1. Have a moody day

The first advice anyone gave me when I announced my breakup was to go and have fun. But I think that’s wrong. While the emotions are still strong take some time to stay in and be moody. Light some candles, grab a colouring book, Netflix, eat some cookies, etc. Take this time to accept that your emotions are valid and they will eventually pass. This will help you move on to the next steps.

2. Find a new hobby

I personally took up colouring. I have been enjoying colouring a new page whenever I feel a little sad and it’s been a healthy way to deal with my grief. While many will turn to alcohol, food, or other unhealthy coping mechanisms, choosing something that benefits you is the best way to move forward. And if you choose something new, it’s a good way to gain a new skill!

3. Spend time with friends

Once you’ve had a moody day, go spend time with friends. I personally have been spending time with my roommate with Chipotle lunches and the tail end of an open mic night. Spending time with someone else can help with the feeling of loss, and allows you to build on new friendships. Personally, this is one of the best ways.

4. Allow yourself one good rant

Not to say it’s nice to say mean things about your ex, but sometimes getting all your regrets, or worries, or complaints about your relationship allows you to expel anything negative still in you. It doesn’t necessarily have to be awful feelings toward them, but even getting out anything that bugged you is a good way to let that be in the past and go forward into a new beautiful, positive life.

5. Netflix

Netflix has been a lifesaver. Watch Netflix and see how fantastic moving on with your life can be.

6. Be active

If anything, the healthiest way to deal with pain is to exercise. Go be active. Whether it’s going for a lovely walk or getting a run in on the treadmill, releasing those endorphins into your body can shed the pain away. It’s as Elle Woods said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.”
