While reading through questions and suggestions from you all, I see lots of comments about wanting to see “Inside My” posts. Inside my purse, inside my backpack, inside my closet, and finally, inside my makeup bag.
Originally, I wanted to just do a quick post on what’s in my makeup bag on an everyday basis, but when I started to do that I realized that while there are certain staples I stick to, I don’t have an everyday basis makeup routine. Yesterday I wore eyeshadow, today I wore highlighter, last week I was obsessed with bronzer, and if the air isn’t too dry tomorrow I’ll likely wear vampy lipstick. Even the small changes of choosing blush v bronzer makes my makeup routine inconsistent, so I thought that I would instead share the products in my makeup bag (it’s actually a drawer) that I use fairly regularly. And then note what I use most often and any comments I have.
To note: I have a light skin tone with cool undertones, blue-grey eyes, and oily skin. These factors influence what products and colours I purchase.
So, who’s ready to go inside my makeup bag/drawer?
Inside The Enthusiast’s Makeup Bag
With my oily, uneven skin tone and light, cool toned colouring, choosing foundation can be a real challenge. The ones following are proven to be perfect for these issues.
Revlon ColorStay Makeup for Normal/Dry Skin in Sand Beige – While there is one for oily skin, I’ve actually found that the one for normal skin applies better to my skin and lasts longer. This colour is a shade darker than my skin, so I combine it with a lighter foundation to give myself a nice “fake tan” for those peaky winter days.
Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream in Light – I use this by itself and mixed with my Revlon, and both ways it provides amazing coverage. I use it with my Revlon to lighter the shade, and by itself when I use bronzer. I wear this every single day. If you want to use it only by itself I would recommend using the Light/Medium shade. I really love this product and plan to use it for forever.
e.l.f. Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter in Glow/Light – I use this as a skin concealer because the applicator is perfect for imperfections and the colour blends perfect with my skin tone. Out of every concealer I have used, this one is by far my favourite by price, blending, coverage, and colour. Great for contouring too.
Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation in Cashew – I’m currently out of this because I use it like crazy. It is magic. It blends like a dream, the colour and coverage is flawless, and it leaves behind the most gorgeous, soft look that a girl would want with her foundation. While it’s a bit pricier, you only need a little bit to get enough coverage for your entire face.
bareMinerals Matte Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 – There’s a reason bareMinerals powder foundation is a cult favourite. And the matte version is even better! It’s great for oily skin and won’t sweat off, which is a huge plus for a busy girl. I don’t even need it with me for touch ups.
After foundation a good bit of colour is needed. Whether you’re a rosy blush girl, or a bronzer queen, this is everything I use to keep me looking like more than a foundation ghost.
Maybelline Fit Me! Blush in Medium Nude – This is my go-to blush because the colour compliments my skin and it applies really well, especially for oily skin. If I could only wear one blush for the rest of my life, it would be this one.
Maybelline Fit Me! Bronzer in Medium Bronze – This is the only bronzer in my collection because I have accepted that I am a pale ghost of a person and I’m not trying to hide it. But this bronzer was added because it is very subtle and adds great colour without me looking like I’m swiping brown dirt across my face. It blends well and until I find something better I’ll be using this one.
Lancome Blush Subtil Duo in 311 – When I’m traveling I really love this blush because it gives me two choices, both while compliment my colouring. I love the lighter colour for days when my skin has zero colour and I want to look natural.
The Beauty Crop The Lighting Crew Highlighting Cream – The best highlighter I’ve used because the rosy hue is beautiful and it blends into my skin instantly. I’ve liked this as a dupe for NARS highlighter because it’s so similar and much cheaper.
I never leave home without my brows, mostly because a good brow can completely change your look and make you instantly look polished.
Elizabeth Mott Queen of the Fill Brow Gel in Medium Dark – Every morning I apply this to my brows to keep them sticking in the right direction. It also adds a more dramatic look to my brows, and strong brows are so important.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil in Medium Brown – I have the travel size, which is perfect for quick touch-ups on the go, and has a great application.
OFRA Cosmetics Universal Eyebrow Pencil – Creamy application that works for any eyebrows. I’ve been using this with my brow gel when I need an extra oomph.
While I only wear eyeliner for special occasions, a good eyeliner you can rely on is important to have in your bag. Now if they just came with an automated robot to apply it for you.
theBalm Mr. Write (Now Eyeliner) in Scott B. Bordeaux – This purple colour is perfect for blue eyes because it’s complimentary and doesn’t bleed out to create a colourful mess. I love this for a subtle pop of colour with neutral eyeshadow.
Eyeko Fat Liquid Liner – This liner is great for a smoky eye or a night look, which is predominantly when I use it. I am in love with how thick the line is, and with all Eyeko products, doesn’t smear or get gross as the night goes on.
Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner in Indigo – Say hello to my party liner. This compliments my eyes like none other and makes them pop! This is great for a smoky eye and doesn’t budge, even if you end up doing Just Dance until 2 in the morning.
Rimmel London Scandaleyes Micro Eyeliner – A very precision line, which is perfect for deepset eyes. This is a great everyday eyeliner. And for the drugstore price, it’s just as effective as the expensive ones!
Beaute Basics Gel Liner Combo – This eyeliner is a gel, which is different, but when I’ve applied it (great for concert looks!) it catches the light so well and compliments my eyes like crazy. Definitely have someone else apply.
Playing with eyeshadow is by far the most fun thing in makeup. And palettes with all the shades are the best! Yes, I own all of the Maybelline The Nudes series and recommend them for anyone who doesn’t want to commit to a more expensive palette, or doesn’t wear eye shadow too often.
NARS Night Series Eyeshadow in Night Flight – When looking for a dark shadow I can wear out that looks and feels amazing, this is my go-to. Night Flight has the feeling of luxury and glides on and stays on like a pro. I have created my best smoky eyes with it. NARS eyeshadows are a worthy luxury investment.
Maybelline The Nudes – A new cult favourite of drugstore junkies, I love this because it’s not so pigmented that I look like I drew a crayon over my face, but adds enough colour to make my eyes look great. This is worn almost daily for a simple nude look.
Pixi by Petra Mesmerizing Mineral Duo in Lavender Bloom – Whenever I wear this pigmented shadow I receive the highest compliments. It looks amazing with blue eyes and goes on very well and blends great. As someone with a basic eyeshadow experience, I found this easy to use and is a go-to on date night.
Maybelline The Blushed Nudes – I personally adore this palette for date night. The pigments are actually quite powerful and the shades look amazing on cool-toned skin. I love this palette like crazy!
L’Oreal Color Riche La Palette Noir – With blue eyes, having a blue palette is great. And this one not only comes with a great brush, but has a range of colours that compliment my eyes well. The darker navy tones are great for a smoky eye, and the whites really pop against kohl eyeliner.
Maybelline The Rock Nudes – Since I attend concerts, go out with friends, attend events around the city, and sometimes just like to look a bit more rocker, having a palette with a bit more edge to it is necessary. This one is seriously dark and makes for a super funky smoky eye. I’m currently obsessed with the shimmery charcoal and the deep plum for going out.
My favourite part of the makeup is choosing my mascara. Between mixing two formulas, getting the bottom lashes perfect, and plumping for a doe-eyed look, mascara is the best, which is why I have so many.
Maybelline Volum’ Express Falsies Big Eyes Waterproof Mascara in Very Black – I never go out without a coat of this on. It is the most easily washable, yet completely waterproof mascara I’ve ever owned, plus the wand for the little lashes looks amazing on top and bottom. This is by far my favourite mascara of all time.
Eyeko Black Magic Mascara – My favourite g0-to for natural lashes that seem to touch the sky! I love this mascara more than anything and apply it almost daily. Simply wiggling it at the base and going up creates flirty, unclumped eyelashes that look like I was born with them.
NARS Black Moon Audacious Mascara – This mascara seriously brings the vava voom to lashes. It offers great control of each lash, and amps of volume, thickness, and makes them a beautiful black. If you want a luxe look, this mascara brings it.
W3ll People Expressionist Mascara – Everyone needs this in their bag. It creates natural, long lashes without clumps and is ridiculously easy to apply. It’s a favourite of many and is always in my bag.
Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara – For a full, blooming look on my lashes I love this mascara. Seriously, it adds such an oomph and I love it! No clumps as long as you twirl the wand.
As my mother says, you never feel as complete as when you have lipstick. Here are some of my favourites. As you can tell, I love matte lips.
Rimmel London Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss in 107 – This is my go-to for parties because it is rich and creamy, stays on (even on New Year’s), and doesn’t dry out my lips. And I love this colour because how dark it is. If you’re going to buy matte, try this.
Pop Beauty Matte Velvet Lipstix in Cozy Crimson – Okay, this is an amazing lipstick by 1) the container and 2) how velvety smooth it glides on and stays for hours. I love this for when I want a bright red lipstick.
ModelCo Ultra Long-Lasting Lipstick in Kitty – The perfect light lipstick, perfect for delicate look, and important to have moisturized lips for application. I love this for a more natural look, and for interviews.
stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso – This is great if you never want your lipstick to go away. I wore this for 10 hours, ate twice, and wiped my lips like none other and it still stayed on. This is a true commitment lipstick, but great colour and moisturizing formula.
TreStique Matte Color & Shiny Balm in Florence Fig/Rose Balm – My favourite for the creamy formula and gorgeous nude formula. I wear this when I want to add a little to my look, but want to keep it natural. Seriously a great colour to have on hand.
Julep It’s Whipped in Kiss Me – Between the colour and the ease of application, this is one of my favourite dark lip colours. I like to pair it with Julep’s It’s Balm in Merry Berry Shimmer and Birchbox’s LOC in Glam Life (This is next on the list) to keep the dark colour and because Glam Life is much easier to line with.
Birchbox Love of Color Complete Tati Collection in Glam Life – While I don’t wear this colour alone because it fades quickly, it makes a great lip liner and the dark colour really is gorgeous. I love wearing this colour for parties.
Manna Kadar Lip Locked Stain in Lucky – While I normally don’t like glosses, I love this one for the subtle colour and how long it stays. It stays on past food, so I love wearing it for class or lunch with friends.
City Color Cosmetics City Chic Lipstick in Je t’aime – I wore this a lot over winter break and constantly received compliments. It has enough pigment to draw eyes, but isn’t so bright you look neon. The formula is beautiful too, and goes on easily.
