While we associate fall with hot chocolate and big chunky scarves, one thing that gets lots in the mix is beauty. From our hair to our skin to our nails, fall is an important to not only keep up with trends but to keep up with maintenance. Change is in the air, and our beauty routine needs to change to.
From observing multiple fall beauty articles, and noticing changes in my own, I’ve compiled the 10 most important beauty essentials/tips/need-in-your-routine tips that you’ll need as the leaves turn orange and the days get colder.
Let’s review, shall we?
The Top 10 Beauty Essentials (Fall 2015 Edition)
As the weather gets colder, our skin dries out. In order to keep your skin from scaling up, invest in facial and body moisturizer to keep it plump and healthy all year long. For skin, try Suave Skin Solutions Silkening with Baby Oil which goes on silky smooth and leaves it baby soft all day long. For your skin, I recommend buying depending on your skin type, but one I have truly loved is Air Repair Complexion-Boosting Moisturizer.
2. Autumnal nail polish
Say goodbye to your pastels! Fall is a time for metallics, darks, and neutrals! Currently I’m wearing Julep’s Penny, but a gorgeous dark red or a classic black is great too. For myself, I think I’ll try a charcoal grey next time.
3. Neutral eyeshadow
I’m not one for a lot of eye makeup, so fall is great because less is definitely more. It’s time to break out your UD Naked palettes and find out how to combine all your brown shadows. As if recommended by just about everyone who wants neutral eyeshadow, here’s an Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palette for you.
4. Dry shampoo
Washing your hair every day can strip it of its natural oils. And during the fall those oils are already pretty dried up just from going outside. Let your hair repair itself by using dry shampoo once or twice a week (or more) and you’ll get gorgeous, healthy locks out of it. From my many years of trying dry shampoos, I’ve finally found the perfect one for my hair: Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk.
5. Dark plum lip
During the fall is the perfect time to try to rock a new lip color. And it’s a great excuse for going darker. Add a plum lip to your look to be a little edgy but a lot gorgeous. Everyone is going to rock a different shade, so make sure to test it against your skin tone before purchasing.
Brighten up tired eyes with highlighter. The days are shorter, school is back in session, and in general your eyes are going to look a little dull. Highlighter will make your eyes look brighter and bring some shimmer to your look. I’ve been using e.l.f. Studio Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter for years now and I think it’s great, especially for the low price.
7. Dark wash
We all know the perfect time to darken your hair is in the fall. Dark wash your hair (aka, use lowlights or dye your hair a shade darker) in the fall because it’s really the best time for you to try it out. And if you’re too nervous, you can also use a tinted conditioner just to try a less permanent darkener. I tried the evo fabuloso conditioner last fall and it made my hair definitely darker and kept it very healthy.
Your lips will dry out. If you don’t believe me, you will soon. Keep your lips hydrated with lip balm. Personally, I keep one in all of my bags. It’s a bit obsessive. My personal favourites are LypSyl Intense Protection LypMoisturizer and Blistex Deep Renewal. If you want a bit of a tint to your chapstick, I love benefit postietint cheek & lip stain.
It’s all about having your hair completely in control this fall. Keep your hair nice and slick and you’ll be completely runway ready. To get the look, keep those flyaways in place with Tres Two Ultra Fine Mist Hair Spray that doesn’t give you stiff hair and is great with humidity.
10. Thin liner
In my honest opinion, if I can see your eye liner from several feet away, you probably have too much on. Which is why I love that fall 2015 is all about thin eyeliner. Keep your line nice and thin, giving you that natural-looking eye. Rule of thumb: your eyeliner is too thick if you can’t blend your eyeshadow into it. My personal favourite eyeliner is e.l.f. Studio Eye Liner because of how comfortable it fits in your hand.
