Eleanor & Park: A Review

Have you ever been in a public place and reading a book that was so powerful that you started sobbing?

That is what Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park did to me. And everyone on the 4th floor of the Knight Library at University of Oregon saw me.

It’s been a while since a book has affected me so powerfully. A book that brings me laughter and tears and squeezing my toes in excitement. And that’s what Eleanor & Park does. It brings you those feelings of first love and it’s beautiful.

I had heard of Eleanor & Park through several friends and fans on social media, enough that I thought, “Okay, maybe I should check this book out.” And when I needed to buy another book for free shipping, well, you can guess this part.

It took me months and months to read. During the school year there just isn’t time. I read the back cover when I got it (Oh, John Green likes it so I should probably get around to reading this) but didn’t actually pick it up until last Friday. And from there it’s history. And by history I mean obsessively reading in all my free time like a hermit.

I’m serious, my roommates didn’t know if I was home or not.

Eleanor & Park is about two 16-year-old high school students. Park is a quiet half-Korean boy with a love for music and comics. Eleanor is a quirky looking red head with a terrible family situation but a good heart. The two meet on their school bus and over a series of months fall in love for the first time. And the ending is a clencher!

As someone who has recently fallen in love for the first time, I relate to the feelings in this book so well. It is truly a story of love and wonder and heartbreak. The emotions you feel hit so close to home and when you’re turning the last few pages the tension in your muscles is unbelievable.

Overall, I recommend this book. It was a New York Times bestseller, has multiple bestselling authors vouching for it, and The Enthusiast recommends it. So go get yourself a copy, read it, and let me know what you think in the comments!

Happy reading!

  1. Oh, how I loved this book. It didn’t make me cry, but it did make me feel very, very angry towards Eleanor’s step-dad. That guy was bad for my blood-pressure, and my teeth. (I would start grinding them whenever he showed up.)
