Insomniac Activities

I have literally never yawned so much in my life. I am a walking corpse, that is how tired I am. Of course, it could be entirely avoided. You know, if my brain would turn off.

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, I am an insomniac. It started about five years ago and sometimes, mostly when school isn’t in session, it is especially bad and I get little to no sleep at night. These past two weeks have been the worst. I’ve been going to bed past midnight and for my occasionally early schedule, it’s hell.

However, I have, in my journey to sleep, discovered some ways to help myself pass the time until I get too sleepy to move. These are tricks that I have either been successful or failed with when it comes to falling asleep. Here they are!

The Do’s and Do Not’s of Falling Asleep

sleep

DO

  1. Singing a song in your head. Sometimes monotony helps with trying to fall asleep. Choose a song and sing it over and over in your head. By the fourth or fifth time I am dead asleep. Songs that I find helpful for falling asleep are “Little Things” by One Direction or “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat.
  2. Tensing your muscles and releasing. I found this one on Pinterest. While lying in bed, relax yourself into a position where none of your limbs are overlapping. Then tense all of the muscles in your body. When you’ve finished, one by one release each muscle. By the time you get to your pinky toe you will be sleeping like a baby.
  3. Pinterest. I have an addiction to Pinterest and it really helps when I can’t sleep. Scrolling up and down my news feed is not only relaxing, but lulls you to sleep. However, if you’re like me and get a little loopy when you’re exhausted, your true colors come out when you pin at 1:30 in the morning. Such as people texting me in the morning and saying, “Wow, you pinned a lot of pictures of Ashton Irwin last night,” to which you can only reply, “It was 1:30 in the morning. Give me some sort of slack.” All in all, it really does help me fall to sleep.

  4. Go over your schedule. Sometimes insomnia is brought on by stress. Relieve the stresses of the next day by going over everything you have to do tomorrow or what you are going to wear or anything else that might be stressing you out. I do this for when I have something important going on the next day and know I won’t sleep unless I’m prepared.

DON’T

  1. Count sheep. I’ve tried this so many times. I know it works for the kid I babysit (I told him to count to a thousand and one and he fell asleep when he reached the highest number he could count to) but I try counting and in the end I’m more focused on the number than how tired I am. Very counterproductive to my goal. Counting Sheep by WildEyesSigns on Etsy
  2. Tumblr. I know it’s like adult Pinterest, but the scrolling isn’t as relaxing as Pinterest. And there’s a lot more text posts, and the reading wakes you up. Leave Tumblr for when you want to be up.
  3. Take sleeping medication. Unless you have a medical problem that requires you to take medication to help you fall asleep, don’t. I take melatonin for when I really can’t sleep and I spend the entire time I should be sleeping thinking, “When is it going to kick in? I’m exhausted” and it takes a good twenty minutes for it to even sort of work.

And those are my tricks to falling asleep! What do you do to cure your insomnia? I’d love to try something new out and see if it helps me fall asleep even sooner. I went to bed at four the other night and I’d love a trick to help that NEVER happen again.

Thank you all for your support and for being the best fan base ever. I love all of you and wish I could give you all big hugs!! *virtual hug*

Stay classy Internet,

P.S. I know it’s a big thing nowadays for people to do live broadcasts nowadays. Would any of you be interested in me doing them? It would be a time for you to ask me questions, get some advice, and other fun shenanigans that come with chatting with Morgan. Let me know in the comments!

Hey Morgan, Deep relaxation is the key. It can be difficult to start but pays off for a lifetime.
